9/11: 10 year anniversary

Today, September 11th, marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. which killed almost 3,000 people.

Although I was not directly affected by this tragedy, I was deeply shaken by it. I was in downtown Chicago and I remember how I was sent home from work immediately and how the financial core was empty like a ghost town when it should have been buzzing with activity. As I was trying to meet up with my sister-in-law to get home safely, I felt this eeriness around me. We were so relieved to be reunited with the family, but at the same time watched in disbelief and silence as the news unfolded.

I can’t even imagine what the families who lost a loved one went through that day and are still going through. The amount of courage and strength that they must have needed in order to move on from such devastation must be unimaginable. The firefighters that responded to the World Trade Center were more than heroes. They were selfless, fearless and focused on saving lives without knowing the danger that they were putting themselves in.

On this day, it reminds me to not take life for granted and embrace all that I have. Whether I’m having a bad day or feeling frustrated and stressed out, this day reminds me to have gratitude. Grateful for the family I have, for our health, and for all the love in my life. To all that were closely affected by this event, may this day not remind you of what you lost but remind you of the love you had and still have.

mommy blogs: is it too late to start one?

What is a mommy blog? A mommy blog is a blog where you write about the trials and tribulations of your daily life as a mom which can be about a specific theme or basically anything you can imagine. Moms write to share ideas about parenting, share their experiences about being pregnant, or just to blow off steam. You can write the blog just for yourself as a diary or share the blog with others as a way of letting your love ones (near and far) stay in touch with your family.  Whether you are writing for yourself or a bigger audience, it’s up to you. You can make it as big as you want.  There are millions of mommy blogs out there but is there room for one more?  I would say YES because what makes a blog unique is YOU.  Every mom is different and has her own opinions and views so your blog will not be the same as any of the blogs out there.  You can rest assure your mommy blog will be one of a kind.  Let’s start one!

How do you start a blog? There are many websites that you can start a blog for free on which are easy to use with lots of templates and easy navigation screens. Here are just a few popular ones:

If you want to make your blog stand out from all the other ones out there, getting your own domain name and hosting service would be crucial. Your own domain name would make you stand out because it’s personalized, customized, and designed by you, the unique mom. The domain name can tell people who you are, what your blog is about, and makes you distinct. You can also have your own personalized email addresses by having your own domain name. The domain name registrar that I like to use is GoDaddy.com because they are one of the largest ones out there with the cheapest price. They currently have .com domains for $7.49 a year! That’s cheap for having your own special domain name.

Once you have your domain name, you will need web hosting. You need web hosting so that you can “store” your website on the internet. Web hosting companies store your website data on their servers or data centers. I web host with Host Gator as they are most reliable, easy to use, and, more important, install your WordPress blog for you in just minutes. You won’t have to be a techie to use this web host because their admin panel is so easy to use. They also have a lot of freebies like if you want to build an online store, you can install a shopping cart to your website with just a few clicks. With Host Gator, you can view your traffic in many different ways and have real time stats as well.  They have very little down time if at all, and their customer service is fantastic because they have real live online help – which I’ve used at times even at two in the morning! What I love most about this web hosting service is that you can create subdomains (i.e. subdomain.domainname.com instead of www.domainname.com) and/or add new domains on your account without having to pay a cent more!

The Host Gator web hosting starts at only $3.96 a month, which is very low already for all the great features you get, but if you want to save even more, I have a 25% discount code for my motherhood, etc. readers:  MOTHERHOODETC25

If you need help with setting up your own mommy blog, I would be willing to help you set it all up if you sign up with these services by clicking on my affiliate links:

alyssa milano’s son is born!

Alyssa Milano and her husband David Bugliari welcomed their son, Milo Thomas, this morning!  He was born Wednesday, August 31 at 9:27am, weighing in at 7lbs and measured 19 inches.

Just hours after she gave birth, Alyssa tweeted this:  “Thank you for all the well wishes for my son Milo. My heart has tripled in size. I love him more than all the leaves on all the trees.”

How exciting for the family of three!  She’s such a social media bug so I’m sure she’ll be tweeting a picture of her baby boy real soon.

Alyssa had tweeted earlier in the year that she was having a boy.  Her and her husband married back in 2009 and this is the first child for both of them.

put on your baby list: hot water dispenser

“What?!” you ask. Why would a kitchen appliance belong on a baby list of stuff to buy?  Well, what’s funny about this water boiler or water dispenser is that it is kind of a staple in Asian households since it is used to make tea but when I introduce this product to my non-Asian friends,  they can’t live without it!

This Zojirushi CD-FAC22 Zutto Micom Electric Dispensing Pot is exactly what we have in our house and I use it daily! What’s the big deal? It provides your household with boiled hot water anytime you need it. Why would you need boiled or sterile water? For a lot of things: mixing baby cereal or formula in the morning, warming up baby bottles, making yourself hot beverages like hot chocolate, coffee or tea, and even making instant noodles or soups. The biggest use I found was when my babies were under 2 which was great to have the access to sterile water 24 hours a day with a touch of a button.

Here are some quick stats on our hot water dispenser:

  • 800-watt and dispenses up to 74 ounces of hot water
  • 1-touch electric dispensing, easy to use
  • Temperature settings include 140, 195, and 208 degrees F; LCD display
  • Nonstick interior; water-level gauge; 360-degree swivel base; auto shut-off for safety

This is the greatest, most used kitchen appliance we own!  It’s stylish, small, and so convenient.  If you use hot water to make formula, what I do is mix half hot water from the dispenser and half filtered cold water to get the perfect temperature for your baby! Your bottle is ready in less than a minute! Of course, you need to check with your doctor to see when your baby can use filtered water. If your baby can’t use filtered water yet, just use all hot water and let it cool, it doesn’t take long especially if you cool it in a bowl of cold tap water.

This Zojirushi CD-FAC22 Zutto Micom Electric Dispensing Pot is used by the whole family and we just can’t get enough of it!
